How to apply for voter ID: Step by step guide

The Election Commission of India provides online voter registration for Indian citizens over 18 years of age. An Indian citizen can nominate himself / herself as a general voter and fill Form 6 online on the National Voter Service Portal.

The general election 2019 is coming in the month of April-May, and thus, it is an opportunity to choose the government which is going to run the country for the next five years. However, to vote in elections, it is mandatory to have a voter ID card.

Pre-requisites for registering to vote

You can enroll as a voter in India if you:

  1. is an Indian citizen.
  2. Has attained the age of 18 years on January 1, the eligibility date for revision of voter list.
  3. Generally resident of the constituency / polling area where you want to be nominated.
  4. Not eligible to be nominated as an elector.

Visit https://electoralsearch.in/ to see if you are registered to vote. If your name appears in the list, you are eligible to vote, otherwise, you must register to vote. For voter registration visit https://www.nvsp.in/.

Step by step procedure of how to apply for a voter ID card:

  1. General voters are required to fill in Form 6 (link for online form). The form is also for ‘first-time voters’ and who are voters who have moved to another constituency.
  2. NRI voters need to fill Form 6A (link for online form)
  3. Fill in Form 8 (link to the online form) for any change in (name, photo, age, EPIC number, address, date of birth, age, relative name, relationship type, gender).
  4. In case of transfer from one place of residence to another within the same constituency, please fill in Form 8A (Link to online form).
